Item 1 - Understanding Health Statistics - Dr David Phillips and Sam

Points discussed in questions from floor:

  • "Hot Spots" is not a good term as can confuse the issues.
  • Reason for Cancers being prevalent in one area is mostly down to age of the population.
  • The Bournemouth Area is average for Cancer in UK (higher skin cancer but lower in other cancers).
  • There is not a particular risk with hospital incinerators (as far as is known).
  • Bigger risk from traffic pollution.

Item 2 - Castle Lane West Cycle Lane Improvements - Ian Kalra and Bob Askew

Points raised

  • The East Way phase is expected to start in early July finishing by end of August.
  • Mallard Road junction coming across East Way is expected to be a crossing in one go and then cycle lane to go across Castle Lane and use the northern side up to Broadway Lane.
  • Problems coming out of Uplands Road was brought up but explained that vision should be just as good as now.
  • Question was raised how the cycle lane improvements would change habits. Asked how many cyclists in audience about 10 hands were raised.
  • A complaint was also made concerning poor state of Throop Road and whether would be used even more as a rat run.

Shorts

• Throop and Holdenhurst Gas Lights

Councillor Borthwick confirmed that gas lights were due to be repainted and updated, including using special glass, which will save 70% of annual running costs in future.

Any Other Business

Peter White advised that Bournemouth Horticulture Society was meeting at Edward St Campion Church on 1st July.

Peter White also advised that a site opposite Longbarrow was going to be used as a community garden. There is also an open day at Longbarrow Allotments on 12th July.

Police Officers were asked to update the list of officers operating in the TMSTH area.

There was a question as to why it takes so long for pedestrian lights at Ibbotson Lane to change and answer may be to do with that this is effected by how the whole system works in Castle Lane West.

Leaflets - explained of problems in delivering leaflets and if members could leave their email addresses could be reminded by this system.

Note: Number attending meeting 60 (including councillors, speakers and committee members)
