Dorset Police would like to remind residents not to allow strangers into their home, regardless of what they are told on their doorstep.
Recently an elderly occupant became victim of a distraction burglary having allowed a stranger in to her home. The male claimed his car had broken down and asked to use her phone book to call for assistance. It was subsequently discovered he had stolen cash and bankcards.
This is one of many fictitious reasons used to gain entry into unsuspecting victims homes. If you are in doubt of callers legitimacy, please call a friend or neighbour to assist you in verifying their identity.
Please pass this information on. Thank you.

This is a good news story from Muscliff and Throop Safer Neighbourhood Team. On Sunday, 9th October 2011 at 9am five young people from the Muscliff and Throop area worked local police and other agencies to rebuild a damaged wall. The wall belonged to an elderly resident who was a repeat victim of criminal damage over the summer. Local police organised funding from the local councillors to pay for materials for the community day of action. The day was a real success and one of the young people has been offered a job. This project is a good example of partnership working in the community. For further details about Muscliff and Throop Safer Neighbourhood Team contact details can be found on Dorset Police website by following the link to local policing. Thank you.

POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING WEYMOUTH MAN
Police in Weymouth are becoming increasingly concerned for a vulnerable missing 55-year-old man.
Nicholas Stephen Crocker from Weymouth, was reported missing just after 9am on Wednesday, 21 September 2011, and was last seen at 6.30am that morning.
Nicholas is white, between five feet seven inches and five feet eight inches tall and of a stocky build. He has receding white or grey hair, white stubble, a tattoo of antlers on the back of one hand and on one forearm.
When he was last seen, he was wearing green camouflage trousers and T-Shirt, a navy blue fleece and black boots.
Superintendent Mike Rogers said: "We are very concerned for Nicholas' safety as this behaviour is completely out of character.
"Nicholas is a licensed firearms holder and our enquiries suggest that a pistol is outstanding. It is possible that Nicholas is in possession of this firearm, which he is licensed to own.
"While there is absolutely no suggestion of any risk to members of the public, we would still ask that Nicholas is not approached. Any sightings of a man fitting his description should be reported to Dorset Police urgently.
"It is essential that we find Nicholas so that we can make sure that he is safe and well - anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should call us as soon as possible."
Anyone with any information or knowledge as to Nicholas' whereabouts should call Dorset Police on 101, quoting incident number 21:98.

HELP PROTECT VULNERABLE NEIGHBOURS FROM BURGLARS AND ROGUE TRADERS
Bournemouth and Poole residents are being encouraged to help protect their elderly and vulnerable neighbours from distraction burglars and rogue traders - as the 'Refer a Neighbour' scheme is re-launched.
Dorset Police and East Boro Housing Trust have teamed up under the scheme to fit free locks and door chains to homes of elderly and vulnerable people in the areas.
The organisations are encouraging concerned residents to call the dedicated Refer a Neighbour hotline number and leave their neighbours’ details on the 24-hour answer phone.
A local Safer Neighbourhood officer will then pay them a visit to provide advice on home security and how to deal with strangers who call at the door, as well as offering the option of having free locks and door chains fitted by East Boro Housing Trust’s Handy Van Security Service.
Detective Inspector Stewart Dipple, who is leading the scheme, said: "Unscrupulous people will try to gain access to the homes of the elderly and vulnerable - employing various distraction techniques ranging from offering to do gardening work, building work or stating they are from the water or gas board - in order to steal their belongings or con them out of money.
"We want to make the elderly and vulnerable members of our community safer and feel safer in their homes. A simple kindly phone call alerting us to a neighbour could prevent them becoming a victim of these vile criminals."
In 2007, when the Refer a Neighbour scheme was last run, more than 200 homes in Poole were fitted with free security devices.
If you have any information regarding the contents of this message, please call either Dorset Police on 01202/01305 222222, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or you may prefer to contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The callers appear to be targeting elderly residents.
Please do not give out personal details to callers over the phone. Do not accept offers of alarm fitting over the phone. If you wish to purchase an alarm, wherever possible seek personal recommendations. Some companies operate high pressure selling tactics so do not be bullied into allowing them to visit you at home.

A local resident has advised Dorset Police of a suspicious incident earlier today. The resident received a telephone call from a male purporting to be a Police Officer trying to sell advertising space in a Community Magazine. The male refused to give a contact number or provide information regarding the place he was calling from.
Additionally we have reports of at least one local business receiving a similar call from a male stating he was a PCSO called Dave asking for a cheque for advertising space. This appears to be a similar scam to the one broadcast last week, which Consumer Direct confirmed to be a current on-going problem. Please be aware the Police do not take money or ask for cheques for advertising.

June 2010
Burglaries have again risen with the recent warmer weather. The majority has been as a result of insecure windows and doors. Some offences have occurred both whilst the occupants were asleep at night and also recently whilst the occupants were nearby in their garden. Please remind friends and neighbours to secure windows and doors, even when they are in or around their homes. We also advise against leaving gardening tools unlocked at the end of the day and keys to locks on the inside of property doors, as these can all be used to gain entry.
Anyone who witnesses anything suspicious is asked to contact Dorset Police on 222 222 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Thank you.

Also an icon may be installed that could be malicious software.

Advice from Trading Standards.
Beware of doorstep caller cons.
Bournemouth Trading Standards are warning residents to beware of doorstep callers exploiting the current bad weather as an opportunity to tout for unnecessary building work.
This warning comes as the Office of Fair Trading revealed an 18% rise in complaints about doorstep callers offering home repairs. More than a quarter relate to roofing.
A typical scenario involves telling the householder that they have a broken roof tile which can be repaired for a small fee. Often this work escalates to a claim that a new roof is needed at great cost, which is unnecessary.
Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Community, said: "In the bad weather residents may be frightened into agreeing to have the work done for fear of the consequences.
"The majority of these doorstep callers do not provide householders with the required paperwork, and consumers often find there are problems with the work once the traders have left. They are then left with the bill to put the work right, as the traders become un-contactable.
"Genuine tradesmen do not normally need to call house to house."
Officers warn that these doorstep traders are very persuasive and do everything they can to get householders to agree to have the work done there and then. Trading Standards always advise residents not to deal with anyone who simply turns up at your door. When you have work that needs doing, shop around, ask friends and get quotes from several traders.
Please report any incidents concerning doorstep traders by calling 08454 040506.

July 2009
This is a message to all HomeWatch members regarding a new trend in distraction burglaries.
In the last few weeks several burglaries have occurred across the Leicestershire force area where householders have been targeted because they have a "For Sale" board outside their homes.
The offenders have knocked on the door and asked if they can view the home as they are thinking of buying in the area. Once they have been invited inside they then split up and steal cash and jewellery before leaving.
Some arrests have been made and this method has not yet been used in our area but Leicestershire Police would offer the following advice:-
1) Never invite unannounced people into your home for a viewing.
2) Only accept viewings arranged by your estate agent. You may wish to check with your insurance company regarding your cover should anything be stolen whilst persons are being accompanied by agents on a viewing.
3) Be a little suspicious - if you feel uneasy about someone calling at your home, don't let them in ,phone the police and tell give them as much detail as you can.
4) For further advice contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.
Please pass this advice onto as many people as possible. Thank you.
